The Challenge

The Santo Domingo Centre of Excellence for Latin American Research (or SD Celar for short) and its affiliates hope to challenge the ways in which Latin America is commonly represented and studied in museums.

Sector: Art/ Museums and Galleries
Target Audience: B2C & B2B
Services Web Design, Web Development, WordPress
Technologies: WordPress CMS, PHP, HTML / CSS, JavaScript / jQuery
Location: United Kingdom

Based at the British Museum, SD Celar also supports cultural heritage initiatives developed in Latin America, and aims to establish a network of communities that are interested in the heritage of Latin America. Overall they also provide greater exposure to Latin American collections.

SDCELAR approached us to work on the branding, web design and development of their new website, a fascinating project which we had the privilege to take on board.

Being based at the impressive British Museum itself, the site had to be fully aligned with the institution’s famous brand guidelines, while retaining its own visual identity. SDCELAR is constantly commissioning new groundbreaking and important research and art projects and the site had to be fully manageable by a small and busy team.

The Solution

The Santo Domingo Centre of Excellence for Latin American Research is part of the British Museum, and as such, has an information page on the museum’s research website. But to showcase their own work and collections, SD Celar required a dedicated website.

We had numerous meetings at their offices, in the heart of the British Museum, with our creative team, and immersed ourselves in their research.

Project Scope of Works

The branding was inspired by some of their commissioned art and historical Latin American collections. The brand colours are taken directly from some of their artists’ work.

We proposed to build the new site on WordPress, where SD Celar’s team could easily add and edit their own content.

The most important elements of the site are:

  • A bespoke and interactive map of Latin America, showcasing their collections and artists
  • Projects were given their own dedicated page, which can be discovered from the main Projects landing page with projects filter
  • Animated sections were added as you scroll to make the site more dynamic
  • A customised, interactive “Collection” wheel that shows the origins (which Latin American countries) an approximate 62,000 objects were discovered in
  • A “Digital Exhibitions” section where individual pieces can be viewed
Resources / Planning

  • Graphic Web Designers
  • UX Specialist
  • SEO Specialists
  • Front-End Programmers
  • Back-End Programmers
  • Project Managers
  • Quality Assurance Testers

The Result

The result is one to be proud of, doing justice to SDCELAR’s extensive collections and artists. The success of the project and of our ongoing relationship are strongly grounded in the creative aspects- as shown in the branding and the website design– as well as the innovative implementation of WordPress, making use of Elementor and various plugins to create powerful virtual exhibition spaces.
