Ikhaya le Themba
Lilo supports Ikhaya le Themba in their effort to alleviate the detrimental effects of terminal
illness and death within the community.
We are currently sponsoring one of Ikhaya le Themba’s
Home Base Care teams, providing them with the necessary financial support. This enables a Care
Team to support a variety of families through the provision of food and medical supplies.
Ikhaya le Themba was established in 2003 in response to the plight of many desperate individuals and families
living in the poverty stricken township of Khayelitsha (South Africa).
Their purpose as a non-profit organisation is to equip the local community with the necessary
skills and resources to provide efficient care for the terminally ill.
Ikhaya le Themba supports
and mentors communities both within and beyond their local border, managing the social
implications of poverty in the following ways:
- Home based care
- HIV awareness training and support groups
- Supporting orphans and vulnerable children
- Establishing food kitchens
- Developing referral systems for social problems
- Educating and training voluntary home care workers
- Providing resources and medical supplies for home based care
- Critical maintenance of the homes for the terminally sick
